Things I Never Thought I’d Say (But Routinely Do)

Oh, kindergarten. So often I catch myself uttering sentences that are so outrageous they could only be uttered in a kindergarten classroom. And, well, then there are the sentences that I'm oh so used to: Don't wear your lunch box. Is that clay in your hair? It's spelled "F-O-R-K." Your have to say the "R." … Continue reading Things I Never Thought I’d Say (But Routinely Do)

Kindergarten Moment of the Day

Raneem: "Ms. Rachel, I love you one-zero-zero-zero!" Me: "Really?!" Raneem: "No, I love you FIVE-zero-zero-zero!" People, this is job satisfaction.

The Final Sprint

I have exactly 6 more weeks left at the school. That's 30 working days. 41 days including weekends. I will finish my work in Kurdistan at 2:55 on June 20th, 2013. Then I will be DONE. It's like seeing the finish line at the end of a crit. I make the last corner and go … Continue reading The Final Sprint

Privacy: It Don’t Exist Here

I'm undecided on whether privacy is an American value, or an American luxury. As I'm an American and I highly value my privacy, I'm not sure that I have the necessary objectivity to decide. In any case, privacy is very, very, VERY American. America's all about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Pulling yourself up. On your own. … Continue reading Privacy: It Don’t Exist Here

Halabja Revisited (Photos)

Photos from last weekend. I visited my Halabja family for the 2nd time. It was a shorter visit, just a lot of eating. A lot of eating. They've invited me back this weekend for a seyran (picnic), which will involve around ten times the eating. I'm going to go, but I'm exhausted and full just … Continue reading Halabja Revisited (Photos)

Books Books Books

It's impossible to find good books here. I have found a few shops that sell books in English, but I have two issues with them: They are all classics. Dickens, Shakespeare, absolutely nothing published after 1870. A lot of them I've read before, and a lot of them are more effort than they're worth to … Continue reading Books Books Books

Israel National Trail marker near Eilat. The National trail runs from the Israel-Lebanon border to the Red Sea. The orange stripe represents the desert (South), and the white stripe represents snow (North). Since the orange stripe is on top, you know you're hiking south. Israel does a REALLY good job marking ALL their hiking trails.
